Dietary Guidelines for Americans
Here are a variety of weblinks to take you to key resource materials related to the 2005 Dietary Guidelines:
Full USDA/HHS guidelines report: (this is the “Policy Document” and appears to be a slightly shortened version of the full DG Report that was issued in August, 2004 from the Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee) It includes an Executive Summary and appendices (16), figures (4) and tables (16).
While there are many take home messages for consumers as a result of the Dietary Guidelines, several key communication messages that relate specifically to fruits and vegetables include the following. These messages are based on August, 2004 Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee’s technical report and consumer focus group testing funded by California Department of Health Services and the National Cancer Institute.
Message: Make Fruits and Vegetables Half Your Plate at Every Meal
- Consumer notes: The amount of fruits and vegetables recommended has gone up for men and women of every age.
- Fruits and vegetables combined equal more servings than any other food group.
This means about half of what you eat at every meal or snack should be fruits and vegetables.
